What sets the price
There is no standard price list for scrap cars, because the price tracks the scrap metal market, and that moves daily. The general rule is simple: the larger and heavier the car, the more metal there is to sell, so a Mitsubishi Shogun will always be worth more as scrap than a Ford Fiesta. Your registration tells us the exact model and its weight, your postcode finds the best rate near you, and what scrap cars are currently paying shows where the market sits this quarter.
Scrap or salvage: sell it the right way
Before you sell for scrap, one question is worth thirty seconds: is the car worth more alive? A car with a sound engine, a desirable model with parts demand, or an insurance write-off in the right category can be worth more as salvage than as metal. If it is end of life, uneconomic to repair, with no resale demand, it is a scrap sale, and the rest of this page is how that works.
Sell it complete
Stripping parts to sell separately looks clever and usually is not. Every part removed comes off the quote: a missing engine can cost you more than £90, and a missing catalytic converter between £80 and £150, depending on the vehicle. Factor in the time, the tools and somewhere to keep it all, and the arithmetic rarely works. The engine, the converter and the battery all pay you more by staying on the car.
The paperwork
The V5C makes the sale smoother, so have it ready if you can, and keep the yellow section. If yours is lost, tell the team when you accept your quote, and you can order a duplicate through gov.uk with the registration, the VIN and the keeper details, for a small fee.
